Summer Tabletop Display

Only a fellow tablescaper knows the joy that comes from playing with dishes.  It is so fun to try out which items will work in a variety of table settings based on themes and colours.  And while creating tablescapes is my most favourite pastime, I also like to put together tabletop displays in much the same manner.

This is a summer display I created for my dining room tabletop.

I started with a small brown suitcase which I've had for years.

White dishes, faux grasses and other pretties were placed inside.

Seashell ball ornaments create a summery feel... does this white starfish.

These two silver birdies add some shine to the display.

You can't go wrong with some candlelight and wine.

The white faux magnolia blossoms contrast nicely with the orange and green.

Glass candleholders filled with sand and tied with white rope make a nautical statement.

The only new items in the display are the orange and white placemats - Dollar Store for $2/ea.

Everything else, I've had for many years.

These white dishes by Pier 1 seem to be my "go-to" when creating this type of design.

Silver napkin rings coordinate with the silver birdies.

So it was just by playing around that I was able to create this...

Do you like to play with dishes?

You should give it a try!

And speaking of which, if you need inspiration for tablescape design, I hope you'll check out the...

  1. Oh, yes! I share that same affliction for dishes and pretties. Half the fun is shopping the house to see what would come together nicely, or is in the right color. Nice vignette with the suitcase, that's a new idea to me.

  2. Really enjoyed your summer table display. It is very attractive and interesting. Love the orange placemats, and this display could take you
right into fall by just changing out the coastal items. Great idea
    putting in the small suitcase..........
I love to play with dishes too.........such a fun thing!! We all need
to do a lil playing for time to time............
Have a great day and thanks for sharing your pretty display.
    Blessings, Nellie

  3. The display is so pretty, bright and fun.

  4. Beautifully done! Love this wonderful mix of different elements and the overall look for your table. A happy summer vignette!

  5. Loving this Lori! Loving the colors and that bright pop of green you added.

  6. So creative, clever, beautiful and summery Lori! I just love the variety of elements and the unique way you have styled them, very fabulous!

  7. Beautiful, love anything in a suit case as you may already know, LOL!

  8. I'm like you and love to put together a tablescape but I never thought of doing a display like that. So beautifully clever! It's even better than a display you would see at Pottery Barn!

  9. What a beautiful setting, Lori. You are the best at playing with dishes. Have a wonderful week! Maria

  10. Oh Lori, I just love your beautiful display! And yes...there is just something about tablescapping. I have found that even with the most still takes time. (But don't we love it?) I just love what you have made happen here! Hugs and blessings,Cindy

  11. I love this idea! This is a wonderful way to display your lovely dish treasures without doing a tablescape. This would be a perfect way to display pieces together that I don't have enough pieces of to do a full out tablescape. I hope you accept that copying is the best form of flattery, because I would like to borrow this idea and use it on one of my tables! Thank you so much for sharing at Celebrate Your Story. I have pinned this to my group Tabletop board, If you would like to join the board, follow it, and then send me a message and I will add you! I would love to include you!

  12. Yes! I LOVE to play with dishes, and love anything coastal. I was just mentioning to someone earlier today that I often wonder why I like what I do. I live in a landlocked state and yet have had a fondness for fish and shells since I was a little girl. The first set of dishes I collected which was when I was in college was Fitz & Floyd's "Coquilles." What you have done here is fabulous. Thanks for sharing.

  13. I love putting together tablescapes, too - but I'm not nearly as talented as you are. This is a fabulous look and everything coordinates nicely.
    Best & Bisous,
    Michelle from Simply Santa Barbara

  14. You've captured summer and placed it in the center of your table!

  15. Oh, I LOVE this!!! It is beautiful! Love the pop of the orange color in the placemats and the shell items are beautiful too. Wha a wonderful idea.

  16. Lori, I love your many beautiful details to see! I Malays love a pop of orange, just perfect! Pam @ Everyday Living

  17. So pretty! I love the orange touches. Stopping by from Silver Pennies Sunday and pinning to Pinterest!

  18. Oh I love your summery vignette on your table! Your new orange placemats provide the perfect punch of color for your white shell accents and blooms! I suffer from the same dish and table affliction :)

  19. I love your beautiful vignette.

I would love to do something like this on our dining room table, but it's where we eat every meal, I blog and where my husband builds frames for his paintings. So, a simple basket of shells is what sits there this week.

    Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  20. I LOVE to play with dishes and so enjoy reading your blog. You always inspire me. Love this one too!

  21. lovely table display so pretty thanks for sharing have a great week

  22. Hi Lori, yes I love to play with dishes and always look forward to see what you have created to share with us. You have created a showstopper this time. Those $2 orange and white placemats really make your white dishes and decor pieces pop. Love it! The white dishes and your starfish are beautiful together. So much thought and creativity in your designs. Always stunning!

  23. Lori,
I love this table top design. You have given me some ideas. I have never seen anything like those seashell ornaments before. The orange placemats are the perfect pop of color. Another great design.
