A Season of Change

Hello again my friends...

My last post was on May 3, 2012 where I mentioned getting ready for my daughter's upcoming wedding and I'm sure many of you thought my hiatus from blogging was due to the preparations for that celebration.

 

 However, that isn't the way my summer played out. Without going into detail but in an effort to "keep it real", I'll just say that in an unexpected turn of events, my days were filled instead with what was, a mom's need to help her child through a break-up, wedding cancellation, selling of a house, the buying and moving into another place and the settling into a new life.

 Thus, my fall season begins on a different, yet now, after much upheaval, more stable course.  I'm ready to get back into spending time at my hobby which of course, is having fun setting tables and adding seasonal decor to my home which I love sharing with you. 

The road of late hasn't been an easy one but with Thanksgiving less than a month away, it is a good time to remember "in all things, give thanks"(1 Thessalonians 5:18) and rather than dwell on the recent hardships and pain, we will reflect on our blessings.

Chestnuts, Acorns & Popcorn

I'm posting a bit early in preparation for Tablescape Thursday but you know what to do! Lots of fun awaits you when you click here.  Susan, our gracious hostess will once again have supplied us addicted dish-lovers with our fix for fabulous 'scapes. 

Last week, my aunt was in town visiting my mom so I decided to  have a family get-together dinner. Since I still had all my fall decor up I went with that type of  tablescape.  This time, I resisted the urge to use my pumpkin bowls and went with an earthy natural theme.

For the centerpiece, I used two large and one smaller hurricane shade/vase. The two larger hurricanes are from Partylite a couple years ago.

Chestnuts surrounded the bases of the white pillar candles in two and in the other one, I placed popcorn kernels.  I tucked three large faux acorns in amongst the vases.  A variety of faux grass type stems were laid lengthwise.

My gold-rimmed white dishes and copper coloured chargers went well with the brown/gold tones of the table linens.

Dinner consisted of Russian/Mexican Chicken, Brown Rice, Green Pepper Steak, Tossed  Green Salad, Carrots, Corn and Quick Black Forest Cake with Ice Cream for Dessert.  When I am scrambling to get the food on the table, I rarely think to take a pic of it but later I always wish I would have thought of it.  I need some lessons from Kathleen at Cuisine Kathleen in that regard!

As a Part Two to that tablescape....

I bought these deep purple glass dessert dishes today at a local antique store (though not antique). 

I got 10 of them for $32 which is just pennies over $3/each which I thought was a good deal.

Of course, when you have something new on hand you want to try them out so I added them to the tablescape I still had set up.

I think the dark purple tones go well with the dark browns.

Shook things up a bit more and put the individual votive holders inside the dessert dishes.

Looks pretty but a dessert would probably be better!

This is one of my favourite fall themed serving bowls.  See the detail in the bottom with the acorns and leaves.

It was hard to get a good picture but the outside edges also have acorns, leaves and pumpkins all around. I used this bowl a lot for my Thanksgiving and fall table settings.

In my last post, I said I was going to get into the Christmas mode now but I guess I wasn't quite ready to leave the fall tablescapes yet....or is it that I'm dreading hauling out all those tubs of Christmas decorations....

Last Year's Fall Decor

Many thanks to the amazing Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for hosting Tablescape Thursday yet again! I am still working on putting out this year's fall decorations but since I wasn't a blogger then, I thought I would share with you a couple of things I did last year including a tablescape that was one of my favourites of the season.


This display happened by accident last year as I was unpacking all of my pumpkin bowls ( ordered from the Shopping Channel quite a few years back) from their boxes and I didn't have anywhere to put them at the time.  I created a grouping on my dining room table and decided to add to it with some fall florals, leaves, faux pears and pillar candleholders.

This was a little vignette I set up on our kitchen island.  I got the "Give Thanks" pumpkin at a local grocery store and put it next to a cross candleholder.  It helps symbolize the theme of Thanksgiving to me.  Here in Canada, it won't be long until its Thanksgiving Day.

Some fall decorations and a hot beverage help make this table into a cozy nook for reading.

Mr. Delight and I love eating many of our meals here at this little table for two by our dining room windows.  I used the rich bold colours of autumn to create a more dramatic tablescape.

I swapped out the pumpkin bowls for these new acorn bowls (HomeSense two years ago).
