Dragonfly Birthday Tea Tablescape

I have previously mentioned that at my workplace, we celebrate coworkers' birthdays each month with a cake during the afternoon break.  Last month, there were 2 staff members with July birthdays and we marked the occasions on a day near the end of the month. Of course, I am in charge of the table decor :-)

It was a milestone birthday for one of the ladies so I incorporated something she has a fondness for and that is dragonflies.

I did a practice run of the tablescape at home and the pictures shown here are from that set-up.

The colour scheme was pink and yellow and I set the table for 4 even though I only used 2 place settings for the tablescape at work.

Surprisingly (to some people), I did not have any dragonfly themed decor so I was on the hunt.

I found these terrific magnet dragonflies at a boutique shop in a nearby town.

The magnet (2 pieces) is very strong and will hold the dragonfly through glass or thick vases.

I filled this lidded glass vase with faux greenery and yellow flowers and put the magnetic dragonflies on the outside.

The dragonfly I put on the lid wasn't magnetic but had a ribbon on it so I wrapped it around the top.

I placed these glass vases filled with similar decor on the ends of the table.

I wrapped little Lego blocks up as tiny decorative birthday presents and scattered them on the table.

These dragonfly cut-outs are from Dollarama...

...and were placed on a star-patterned table runner which was actually fabric that I just taped to the underside of a white table runner.

The place settings included Dimity Rose china by Royal Albert (my wedding china).

I folded the napkins in an accordion type fold mimicking the wings of a dragonfly.

Another of the magnetic dragonflies served as  napkin ring decor.

All this was packed up into some totes and set up in the staff room at work.

I wasn't able to take any pics of the table there but the birthday celebration was a great success.  The only hard part was getting back to work afterwards!

Thanks for visiting!

  1. Lori,
What a lovely tablescape. I am so in love with those dragonflies. I have never seen any like that before. Your china pattern is perfect for the dragonfly theme. I still haven't got all my dishes out yet. Seeing all your pretty tables is making me get the itch to do some. This weekend I plan on cleaning out the storage room in the basement so I can get to my plates. Have a great weekend!

  11. How how absolutely lovely!

Your tablescape is amazing. And I ADORE your wedding china - it is gorgeous!

What a special friend you are to do this for a colleague friend. She must have felt so cared for that day. Milestone birthdays are only really fun at 13, 18, and 21, haha. After that, well, let's just say each day is a blessing and leave it at that. /Chuckle.

  16. DEBBIE - Re your comment above - I don't have your email address but just wanted to let you know, I got all the dragonflies at a local gift shop a few years back. I don't have the packaging to see what brand they were. The cut-out dragonflies were from the Dollar Store. Sorry, I couldn't be of more help! Lori, Dining Delight
