How to Make Candles Fit in Holders

Today's post is more about function than flair but ultimately, once you do it, you will be creating a better look and ambiance for your table.
I'm talking about how to make tapered candles fit properly in all types of holders. Credit for this candle tip goes to my mom who showed me what she does and it works so well, I wanted to share it with you.

Here's the problem...the candleholder you want to use has a hole that is too big for the tapered candles you have on hand.

Simply placing the candles in the hole will result in crooked candles which look terrible and cannot be burned safely.
So here is what you do.
Grab some type of plastic cling wrap (food wrap).
Tear off a thin piece and double it over on itself. Then start wrapping it around the bottom of the tapered candle.
Adjust the number of times you wrap the cling wrap around and/or the amount until the bottom of the candle fits securely in the hole.
Now your candles will stand up straight and burn evenly and safely.  I've never had a problem but it is probably best not to burn the candle right down to the level of the cling wrap.
Here is an easy step by step picture to help you remember this tip.
Of course, you are going to encounter the opposite problem where the tapered candles are too big for the hole in the candleholder.  I haven't done a picture tutorial on that as all I do is take a paring knife and whittle the bottom of the candle until it fits.

With cooler temperatures soon upon us, you'll be wanting to create the cozy ambiance that only candles can provide and I hope you find these candle tips helpful.
Do you have another method of making tapered candles fit properly in candleholders?

  1. Perfect solution! TFS such an easy solution. I always have trouble with this!

  2. I use these very sticky wax dots. I think your method combined with these would be the perfect solution!

  3. This is a great idea. I use poster tac putty in a similar manner, but next time I will try your idea!

  4. Brilliant! I've used foil, but sometimes it shows or doesn't "stick" well.
Blessings from Harvest Lane Cottage, do drop in for a visit!

  5. My mother and I have used your method for along time and it is a great tip. I love you can hide the clear plastic wrap in crystal and glass candle holders. I'm glad you shared this with us.
Please, come visit my Lemon Zest post this week!
    Have a wonderful weekend!

  6. Thanks so much for this great tip...I see myself using it a lot.

  7. Thank you so much for this tip. I have tried several methods and they work to varying degrees. This method looks perfect. Thank you. I enjoyed all your photos.

  8. Great tip! Thanks so much for sharing it!

  9. When the hole is too big ! Use Candle Grip

  10. I have had candles in the cupboard forever that wouldn't fit in my candelabra.
Today I googled and found this fabulous solution.
Sending huge gratitude and thanks from Sydney Australia.

    1. That is so great to hear!! I always wonder if people find that solution when they google the problem and you've answered my question!
Thanks for letting me know! ~ Lori

  11. Thanks for the idea. It is incredible how sellers online of candles do not give the specific base diameter of the product, or advertise an incorrect size as happened to me on Amazon. Now I can use my leaning candles. I did not want to buy candlestick liners-- especially throw away ones.

  12. WOW! this is a super solution! Thank you

  13. Thanks for sharing such an informative post. This blog is very helpful
