Canada Day BBQ

I am late posting this since Canada Day was on July 1st however, I wanted to share with you how we chose to celebrate our nation's birthday. Perhaps, it will provide inspiration for my Canadian readers for next year.

Having been very busy the week before, we opted for a low-key, little-fuss celebration and had my parents over for a Canada Day barbeque in our backyard.

I made a pitcher of mojitos and we started with a glass of this refreshing minty beverage.

Pre-dinner conversation was enjoyed out here as we sipped our drinks.

Of course, I had to have some fun setting a red and white table.

Flags from the Dollar Store in a heart-shaped vase make the perfect decorations.

I used this white lantern with a red jar candle as the main centerpiece for the table.

Appropriately themed handkerchiefs (Dollar Store) were used as a runner as well as napkins at each place setting.

The dish stack consists of a red charger and an alternating layering of red and white dishes from Pier 1.

Mr. Delight barbequed the burgers along with a separate dish of mixed scallops and prawns.  I made the potato salad and took a turn at the barbeque while tossing the veggies on the grill. It was such a hot day, I opted to set up the food on the kitchen island and we came in and dished up then took our plates back outside to the table.

For dessert, I made these strawberry trifle parfaits which were colour coordinated for the occasion.

These tiny flag picks (Dollar Store) are perfect for adding themed décor to food items.

After dinner, we went back out to the "comfy chairs" and sat around the fire bowl as evening fell.

Simple Canada Day décor was added to my flower pots.

With just a bit of effort in putting some food on the grill, some simple themed décor and inviting some special guests, we were able to celebrate Canada Day in style.  We have so much to be thankful for living in this great nation.

  4. With a backyard this beautiful, I'd come early and stay the entire day! What a treat! I love all your flag touches, especially the tablecloth. Nice! The menu looks fantastic. I like keeping things simple so I don't spend too much time in the kitchen and away from my guests, which is, after all, why I invite people over! Lovely everything!
