Celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Canada

We have been a bit slower in catching on to celebrating Cinco de Mayo (literally, the 5th of May in Spanish) here in Canada compared to our American counterparts but better late than never!
Click here to learn what this Mexican holiday is really about.

It seems just like everyone is a little bit Irish on St. Patrick's Day, everyone is a little bit Mexican on Cinco de Mayo and I'm up for any excuse to eat some tacos and have a margarita... or two!

With that in mind, I decided to put together a tablescape for a Cinco de Mayo backyard luncheon.

For something different, I used this round table in an area next to the house instead of the usual set-up in our cabana.

The plastic chairs have seen better days so I dressed them up a bit by tying a white pillow case around the chair.

Then I pinned on some green napkins and added a faux floral embellishment.

For a more colourful choice in tablecloth, I used this serape-like shawl my daughter brought back from Mexico for me last year.

The centerpiece began with this colour-coordinating lantern.

I created two arrangements in terra cotta pots with faux greenery, flowers and a fresh lime and placed them by the lantern.

The placemats, dishes, flatware and napkins were selected from those in my most colourful stash.

Small glass dishes (min-tasting size) were placed inside terra cotta pots and filled with corn chips.

Add some homemade salsa on the side and you have the perfect appetizer.

And what's a Mexican celebration without a margarita!

Yum!

A taco bar is the perfect way to set up for a casual Cinco de Mayo luncheon.
Crock pots help keep the seasoned ground beef, salsa chicken and Spanish rice warm.

Guests can help themselves and you can enjoy the fun too!

Yes, I'm glad my fellow Canadians are jumping on the bandwagon with a reason to celebrate in this way on
the 5th of May!

Do you do anything special for Cinco de Mayo?

  1. What a great, pretty, fun and colorful table my friend! Al fresco and
the food sounds great! Wish I went to your house for 5 de Mayo.
Actually, there's no celeb of such a holiday here, so I just love making a table every year, but we'll have a luncheon with my mom tomorrow.
I love the serape you DD brought you from Mexico.

  5. Very creative table. Your enthusiasm is contagious for creating a Cinco De Mayo table. I think the celebration is catching on. I live in Alabama and I don't know a soul that mentions it. I have seen it in the blogging world for the last six years and it is grabbing me. It is a good excuse to enjoy the cuisine.
Your table is darling and your food looks yummy. Love the colors and presentation.

  6. Love the colors that you used for your celebration. Perfect for Cinco de Mayo. We were invited to have dinner with six of our neighbor friends, but weren't able to attend. However, on Sat. we went to one of our little grandsons first birthdays and they had a taco salad bar. It was delicious! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,

  7. Your table setting looks so bright and cheerful! Just perfect for Cinco de Mayo. I love how you set up the food bar with the crock pots too. We went out to eat last night at a nearby Mexican restaurant and it was so good! It's good to know that Canadians celebrate that day too.
