Backyard Engagement Party

As mentioned in my last post, here is a look at the engagement party held for our son and his fiancé in our backyard a few weeks ago.

First off, let me say that of course you see lots of gorgeous sunny pictures of outdoor events on Pinterest and various blogs but there are very few pictures of alfresco get-togethers occurring in the rain. (Believe me, I've looked!)

This post and its pictures will capture real life
with real weather!
Yep, it rained!
After weeks of beautiful weather, we woke up to pouring rain on the day of the party. It did dampen our spirits but only for awhile.  Thanks to advanced planning (rain was in the forecast) and the terrific attitude of our guests, the gathering was a great success in spite of the weather.

We ended up wrapping all the banners and signs I had made in plastic to keep them from getting wet. (Special thanks to Mr. Delight for coming up with this idea below even if the letters did get a bit off kilter.)

Fortunately, we have this cabana for one covered area and I attached a banner on it.
(My daughter is lighting some lanterns inside)
We set up all of the other tables under borrowed canopy roofs. The blue tarps almost looked like blue skies!
(C'mon, work with me people!)

I tied white curtains to some of the poles to try to "pretty" them up a bit. Mr. D added lattice to the back.

The engaged couple had chosen Hunter Green & Kelly Green along with some brown accents as their colours.
We borrowed blue/gray chairs from our church which, although not part of the colour scheme, blended in nicely.
One of the guests of honour, our son lights the candles in preparation for the party.
The tabletop décor reflected the couple's love of nature and incorporated a woodland theme.
(Click HERE to see post about the table décor)
(I rented the tablecloths, chair sashes, cloth napkins and beer glasses but the rest of the items are mine.)

My dad put his talents to use and created these wonderful wooden initials for each table.
 They really personalized the décor.

Guests were greeted at this Welcome Table where they left their cards and gifts.  Framed photos of the happy couple taken throughout their courtship were on display.
I decorated a white birdcage to hold the cards.

The take-home favours were also on this table.

M&L had ordered some lovely autumn flower seed bombs wrapped in tulle for their guests.

Drinks were a help-yourself affair at the beverage station.

Another sign directed guests to the food on our sundeck.

A vegan taco bar was prepared by my son's fiancé reflecting their lifestyle choice.

Crockpots held the delicious warm choices which included refried beans, Mexican rice and "veggie ground round".

There were so many toppings to choose from!

Cloth napkins and cutlery were kept handy in woven baskets.

I made this ENGAGED banner and hung it over the plate/cutlery station on the sundeck.

One of the guests of honour (aka the chef) helps herself to a taco.

It rained off and on.

Although not too attractive, I was happy we had set up the tarp canopies.

Thankfully, it was a warm rain with no wind and

the guests seemed to take it all in stride.

The engaged couple certainly enjoyed themselves and by doing so, set the tone for the party.

Even their doggie had a good time and was dressed for the occasion.

As the day turned to evening, I brought out a basket of throws for any chilly guests and eventually the rain stopped completely.

A late night snack of order-in pizza helped the party continue on...

...as did gathering around a fire.

So despite the rainy weather that threatened to turn a celebratory day into a dreary affair, the engagement party was anything but and a good time was had by all!
Wishing M&L all the best for their upcoming wedding.
Love you both so much!

Thanks so much for visiting and checking out the party!

How beautiful, and how refreshing to see a real life party, and not something styled to within an inch of it's life. You did such a gorgeous job and it looked to me like a true reflection of a loving family celebration....x

Well arent you Mum of the year! You did a great job everything looks so nice. The lattice and curtains added a nice touch and so does all the decor. I love the idea of the taco station as well with the crock pots keeping food warm, I think I might try that at my next party! Great job :)

Wonderful engagement party! Love that your husband made the initials. Also - love the floating candles with rocks and greenery floating in the water - not too girly - just right to honor the couple. Well done! Catherine

Looks like a fabulous engagement party. Perfect idea to have it outside (rain or no rain). You were prepared. Love how you made it so personal and the initialed center pieces your dad made. I love a fire and I am sure the guests all loved it too. Like how you carried the party late with pizza.

This just totally gave me the sniffles! First I love how everyone just pitched in and did their part to make sure the kids that nothing metaphorically rained on their parade. What a great group of folks to just roll with the flow! Second, the talent that runs in your family is pretty impressive. Your Dad MADE those wooden initials on the tables?!!?!?!? Does he sell those? If not, he SHOULD! Pin, pin, pin!!!!!!!!! And YOU did a wonderful job with the ENGAGED sign!

My nephew recently got engaged, and his wife-to-be is vegan. I'm going to make sure those 2 see this. I've never heard of a vegan taco bar, but I know it's something they'd really enjoy!

You're right about how the borrowed chairs from your church just blended right into the decor. Good call!

All told, this turned out great and I'm very happy for the couple and both families! Congratulations all around!

Looks like your son's engagement party was such a blast. The place seems really filled up and well attended. About the one thing you can wish for an event like that, right? Anyway, it's nice that you've taken account of the seating capacities, and supplied a sufficient amount of furniture for that thing. Thanks for sharing that!

Yeah really amazing and natural pictures. Beautiful weather. I must say that advanced planning for any party is must and we can tackle such situation if we have planned an event well. I have already started planning for decoration of banquet halls in Miami.
